This book, delightfully written by Xavier Massó, embarks on a journey through the four dimensions of national education, addressing the threefold meaning of the “End” in Education, along with the historical context that gave rise to its original purpose. Journeying through the timeline of our culture, the author recounts the emergence of the current educational system and the original objectives it sought to achieve. Yet, The book goes further, describing the very limits of what constitutes a well-instructed education and warning of a potential downfall if certain prevailing ideologies take hold.

Rich with historical details, verified information, and exquisite prose, the author highlights the successes and failures of the current educational system. The work foresees a feudal future for national education if certain educational “experts” continue to promote ideas disconnected from the realities of the classroom. The author argues, and convincingly demonstrates, that the education system has been burdened with too many roles beyond its original limits and mandates—those of knowledge transmission and enlightened instruction.

However, contemporary politics is now dictating the end of education as a universal means for social progress and equality, a prophecy that many will find painful and others unsettling. This essay must be read with care and attention, encouraging both the correction of existing errors and the dissemination of improvements within the educational system. The author’s arguments are firmly grounded in logic and evidence, making for an intelligent and fascinating read about the current state of education.

Xavier Massó: “Educationally, we are entering the «esperpento»” (1)

1“Esperpento” is a literary style first established by Spanish author Ramón María del Valle-Inclán. This artistic technique consists of distorting reality in an attempt to reach the authentic being, the ultimate essence of people, things, and situations.
