With Toni Alb\u00e0<\/strong> \u2013 widely known for his impersonations of the king on Pol\u00f2nia<\/em> and other shows \u2013 we are linked by several curious facts that few would ever suspect, and which will soon come to light over the course of this interview. Among these are palaeontology and human evolution, not to mention a shared friendship with journalist Joan Ignasi Ortu\u00f1o, and even ancestral roots in villages near the Alt Camp region. He\u2019s from Aiguam\u00farcia and I\u2019m from Vila-rodona \u2013 both of us connected to this corner of Tarragona. So many common origins, so many coincidences, certainly call for a Face to Face<\/em> with this giant of Catalan comedy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When did you first discover your love for the stage?<\/strong>
\nI began my acting journey in my hometown of Vilanova i la Geltr\u00fa, performing in productions like Els Pastorets<\/em> at the Cercle Cat\u00f2lic de Vilanova. I loved being on stage. But it was at 15 when I joined an amateur theatre group, rehearsing three days a week. So, my formal acting training began at El Timbal between 1979 and 1980, with classes like mime.<\/p>\n

And how did things develop in your later teens?<\/strong>
\nI started attending the Institut del Teatre while finishing secondary school. I had a great time. I was mad about comedy.<\/p>\n

But one has to be brave to reach new heights. What did you do that time?<\/strong><\/p>\n

At 19, I left for France to perform a mime drama with five musicians. When we finished, a man with a strong Tortosa accent approached me \u2013 always addressing me formally \u2013 and said, \u201cNext year, you\u2019ll be opening the Sitges Festival\u201d.<\/p>\n

And who was that character?<\/strong>
\nThat man was none other than Ricard Salvat, a great figure of Catalan theatre. And so, in 1983, I made my debut at the Sitges Theatre Festival. Soon after, and encouraged by Ricard Salvat, I moved to Paris to study mime at the \u00c9cole Internationale de Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Jacques Lecoq, where I trained until 1985.<\/p>\n

What do you know of Ricard Salvat now?<\/strong>
\nA few years ago, a secondary school student came to do a project on theatre and chose to interview me. When I asked who her tutor was, fancy that \u2013 it was Ricard Salvat. I went to visit him not long after and found his office full of papers and theatre posters \u2013 one of them, hanging on the wall, was from the mime drama that had first brought us together. A few years later, the dear man passed away.<\/p>\n

I see you founded the group Dram Bakus with two classmates from your Paris school: Bruno Delahaye from Normandy and Kevin Magill from Canada. Together you presented the comedy show Op\u00e9ration Fu!<\/em> in 1986. After ten seasons touring half the world and six hundred and fifty performances, what did you do next?<\/strong>
\nI directed Brams o la kum\u00e9dia dels herrors<\/em> in 1987, a comic piece parodying the final rehearsals of Shakespeare\u2019s Richard III<\/em>, starring a very young Sergi L\u00f3pez.<\/p>\n

You never worked with La Cubana, but that play seems to have brought you quite close to them.<\/strong>
\nAbsolutely \u2013 at the premiere, Jordi Mil\u00e1n, director of La Cubana, was in the audience. After the show, he told me that if Sergi L\u00f3pez weren\u2019t so young, he\u2019d have signed him on the spot. That same Sergi L\u00f3pez who later built a film career in France.<\/p>\n

You worked with Andreu Buenafuente on various programmes and TV channels. Who else did you share the screen with back then?<\/strong>
\nDavid Fern\u00e1ndez, Santi Mill\u00e1n, Edu Soto, Jordi R\u00edos, and the brilliant M\u00f2nica P\u00e9rez.<\/p>\n

The one who plays Infanta Cristina on Pol\u00f2nia1<\/sup><\/em>?<\/strong>
\nExactly. An underrated actress in this country, though she\u2019s also a remarkable writer.<\/p>\n

Too right! \u2013 I\u2019ve had the pleasure of interviewing her for a Face to Face<\/em> on Educational Evidence<\/em>. With so many comedy colleagues, it all feels very Pol\u00f2nia, doesn\u2019t it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even more so with the play La Fam\u00edlia Irreal<\/em>, performed alongside the Pol\u00f2nia<\/em> team. That time \u2013 and every day \u2013 was packed with anecdotes. We had an absolute blast performing it. It was like saying: \u201cwhat mischief are we going to get up to on stage today?\u201d I\u2019d often improvise, leaving many of my fellow actors in stitches.<\/p>\n

But that play was a bit of a delicate matter, given it dealt with the King of Spain. Any calls from Zarzuela Palace?<\/strong>
\nWell, I\u2019d been impersonating the King since 2002 and that play came out in 2012. That said, one day, I was talking with politician Xavier Trias, who told me an unbelievable anecdote. Apparently, the Count of Almansa, former head of the royal household, got in touch with Trias, complaining that the King was being impersonated every week. The Madrid press was full of headlines like \u201cmockery and scorn towards the King of Spain\u201d. So, the Count insisted something had to be done. Trias met with TV3, the Government, and others to make a decision and…<\/p>\n

Go on \u2013 what was the outcome?<\/strong>
\nTrias rang the Count of Almansa and told him:
\n\u2013 \u201cAs for the issue of the King being impersonated weekly? Consider it dealt with\u201d.<\/em>
\n\u2013 \u201cOh really?\u201d<\/em>
\n\u2013 \u201cFrom now on, it\u2019ll only be every each other week\u201d<\/em> \u2013 and then he hung up.<\/p>\n

And regarding the Catalan independence process \u2013 have you faced any legal proceedings?<\/strong>
\nAll resolved. All cases dismissed.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne day, some students asked me what they had to do to become famous, and I told them that wasn\u2019t the right question\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Looking back on your long comedy career, what does the word \u2018effort\u2019 mean to you?<\/strong>
\nEffort is what makes up for luck, talent, and a fortunate star. You have to work hard to achieve what you’re passionate about. One day, some students asked me what they had to do to become famous, and I told them that wasn\u2019t the right question. They should be asking themselves what it takes to perform good theatre and strive for excellence.<\/p>\n

And you, Toni \u2013 what were you like as a student back then?<\/strong>
\nIf I liked the subject, I did well. If not, I was pretty average.<\/p>\n

What subjects did you enjoy?<\/strong>
\nScience \u2013 especially palaeontology and human evolution. I wanted to be a biologist. I loved La Vida y la Tierra2<\/sup><\/em> by Rodr\u00edguez de la Fuente. Ethology fascinated me.<\/p>\n

What advice would you give students today?<\/strong>
\nTo work hard for what they\u2019re passionate about. To make the most of each day. To value that carpe diem<\/em> they\u2019ve been given. And to reflect on life, understanding that one day it all ends \u2013 and even more so if you haven\u2019t made the most of it through effort and dedication. I tell my two kids \u2013 aged 18 and 16 \u2013 the same thing: I can\u2019t be their friend, but I can be a father who guides and pushes them to become good people.<\/p>\n

Can you tell us about an upcoming project in your comedy career?<\/strong>
\nA cheeky play whose title says it all: 50 Da\u00f1os de Memocracia<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Toni, through this chat I\u2019ve come to know an actor who doesn\u2019t just do comedy \u2013 he lives and teaches truth through performance. Perhaps we\u2019ll meet one day at Abric Roman\u00ed3<\/sup>, discussing human evolution \u2013 or perhaps involution. I\u2019ll leave it here.<\/strong><\/p>\n
