La hip\u00f2tesi m\u00e9s acceptada actualment \u00e9s que l&#8217;arxip\u00e8lag canari \u00e9s el producte d&#8217;un punt calent a trav\u00e9s d&#8217;un moviment de placa lent (d&#8217;1,2 a 2,5 cm\/any) sobre una litosfera gruixuda d&#8217;uns 15 quil\u00f2metres d\u2019espessor. Els dos factors anteriors, placa lenta i litosfera gruixuda, han provocat que hi hagi poques illes a\u00e8ries i mal alineades, molt diferent del cas, per exemple, de les Hawaii, on la placa \u00e9s r\u00e0pida i la litosfera prima, permetent en aquest cas la producci\u00f3 de moltes illes molt alineades (per a m\u00e9s detalls podeu consultar l&#8217;article de la revista 2-7). Tant a les Can\u00e0ries com a les Hawaii, l&#8217;evoluci\u00f3 t\u00edpica de cada illa ha estat: 1) <strong>Vulcanisme submar\u00ed<\/strong> sobre el <em>hot spot<\/em> (cas del Complex Basal de la Gomera); 2) <strong>Escut tole\u00edtic<\/strong> \u2013 alcal\u00ed aeri sobre el <em>hot spot<\/em>, donant-se el <em>rift<\/em> en forma de Y que va propiciar grans lliscaments als flancs (cas de El Hierro durant el Plistoc\u00e8 i de La Gomera al Mioc\u00e8), a m\u00e9s de noves erupcions sobre les anteriors, amb tend\u00e8ncia a magmes cada vegada m\u00e9s diferenciats en el cas de Les Can\u00e0ries; 3) <strong>Hiatus erosiu<\/strong> quan l&#8217;illa s&#8217;allunyava del <em>hot spot<\/em> (cas d&#8217;El Hierro i La Gomera actuals); 4) <strong>Rejoveniment del vulcanisme<\/strong> en passar l&#8217;illa sobre camps de distensi\u00f3 (falles connectades amb la ploma), que produiran erupcions alcalines amb increment de magmes diferenciats si la litosfera \u00e9s gruixuda (cas de Tenerife actualment); 5) <strong>Erosi\u00f3<\/strong> i tend\u00e8ncia a les illes a menys relleu (cas de Lanzarote i Fuerteventura).<\/p>\n<p>Vist aix\u00f2, ara podem ordenar el cas d&#8217;El Hierro i les seves diferents fases volc\u00e0niques.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fase <em>Ti\u00f1or<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La hist\u00f2ria de l&#8217;illa d&#8217;El Hierro va comen\u00e7ar amb un petit escut avui desmantellat per l&#8217;erosi\u00f3 i per lliscaments gegants que el van denudar. Per\u00f2 cal afegir que gran part d&#8217;aquells materials van quedar ocults sota un gran volum d&#8217;erupcions posteriors. El nucli efusiu d&#8217;aquell primer escut se situava al sud de l&#8217;illa actual. D&#8217;all\u00ed van emanar un gran predomini de basalts (picrites i tefrites) sota erupcions poc explosives. L&#8217;explicaci\u00f3 era que els magmes eren poc diferenciats des del mantell. De fet, no existia encara una cambra magm\u00e0tica que acumul\u00e9s materials diferenciats. Tot aix\u00f2 passava entre els 1,12 i els 0,88 milions d&#8217;anys, quan Homo erectus s&#8217;estenia pel m\u00f3n. Finalment, i fa uns 800.000 anys, es van produir erupcions explosives que van formar el grup volc\u00e0nic de <em>Ventej\u00eds<\/em>, emetent laves molt riques en xen\u00f2lits m\u00e0fics que van fluir cap a Valverde i la costa est. Immediatament despr\u00e9s, el flanc nord-oest de l&#8217;edifici volc\u00e0nic es va desplomar sota un gran lliscament deixant una \u00e0mplia depressi\u00f3 en forma de caldera. Avui dia tots aquests materials s\u00f3n visibles al nord-est en alguns penya-segats deixats pels lliscaments gegants de la illa.<\/p>\n<p>Per\u00f2 el gran ascens de magmes per sota de l&#8217;illa provocava l&#8217;expansi\u00f3 de la superf\u00edcie. Aix\u00f2 comportava una s\u00e8rie d&#8217;esquerdes en forma de Y a 120 graus una de l&#8217;altra. A partir d&#8217;elles van poder produir-se uns esdeveniments que primer van ser estudiats a Hawaii i despr\u00e9s a les Can\u00e0ries. Aquestes superf\u00edcies de trencament van propiciar quelcom inaudit i de dimensions gegantines. Aix\u00ed, i prop dels 0,8-0,54 milions d&#8217;anys, es va produir un gran enfonsament de tot el nord de l&#8217;illa. Aquesta va caure i es va enfonsar sota l&#8217;oce\u00e0 deixant les seves restes als fons submarins. El pl\u00e0nol de caiguda va seguir les esquerdes en Y de l&#8217;illa. M\u00e9s tard el proc\u00e9s es va repetir dues vegades m\u00e9s a <em>Las Playas<\/em>, un entre els 0,54 i els 0,17 milions d&#8217;anys, i un altre entre els 0,17 i els 0,14.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fase El Golfo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amb origen a la conca del lliscament del <em>Ti\u00f1or<\/em>, va cr\u00e9ixer un altre escut circular avui desmantellat per l\u2019erosi\u00f3. A aix\u00f2 se li va sumar la producci\u00f3 de nous lliscaments gegants i el recobriment de posteriors erupcions. Els materials d&#8217;aquest escut es van acumular entre 0,54 i 0,17 milions d&#8217;anys quan <em>Homo sapiens<\/em> evolucionava per l\u2019\u00c0frica. La composici\u00f3 d&#8217;aquelles erupcions va ser molt variable, des de nefelines fins a traquites sota una explosivitat interm\u00e8dia. \u00c9s a dir, aquells magmes ja estaven una mica diferenciats des d&#8217;una cambra magm\u00e0tica m\u00e9s enll\u00e0 dels 14 quil\u00f2metres de profunditat.<\/p>\n<p>Les restes d&#8217;aquell escut les tenim visibles als penya-segats deixats pels lliscaments gegants de l&#8217;illa al nord i al nord-oest. Aquests es van desplomar prop dels 0,170 als 0,140 milions d&#8217;anys al sud-est de l&#8217;illa. Aquest enfonsament va esfondrar sota el mar una gran part del territori. Per\u00f2 no va ser l\u2019\u00fanic lliscament. Prop dels 0,158 milions d&#8217;anys se&#8217;n va produir un altre al nord que va enfonsar gaireb\u00e9 un ter\u00e7 de l&#8217;illa. Aquests processos s\u00f3n molt ben coneguts a Hawaii sota el nom de <em>pali<\/em>. La causa es troba en el creixement de l&#8217;illa sota les seves erupcions fins a crear talussos tan inestables que propicien l&#8217;esfondrament de parts de superf\u00edcies molt extenses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explosi\u00f3 vulcaniana de Malpaso<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tot i que el vulcanisme d&#8217;El Hierro es va caracteritzar per emissions de baixa explosivitat, fa pocs anys es va trobar una excepci\u00f3 catastr\u00f2fica. Un flux pirocl\u00e0stic sota corrents de densitat va cobrir amb uns 80 cent\u00edmetres de pumites i traquites una superf\u00edcie d&#8217;uns 13 quil\u00f2metres quadrats. Aquest esdeveniment explosiu de tipus <em>base-surge<\/em> va ser el producte de l&#8217;ascens d&#8217;un magma molt esp\u00e8s que, sense poder fluir amb facilitat, va explotar i es va desplomar de cop des de les altures de l&#8217;illa. El seu nucli emissor es trobava prop de la muntanya <em>Tanganasoga, <\/em>i va produir una seq\u00fc\u00e8ncia decreixent de la mida dels elements, des de bretxes volc\u00e0niques fins a cendres de suspensi\u00f3 durant el flux. La dataci\u00f3 de l&#8217;esdeveniment s&#8217;estima pel voltant 176.000 anys, tot i que hi hagi altres propostes que ho daten sobre els 8.600 anys.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erupcions posteriors als escuts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Localment, i amb posterioritat a l&#8217;\u00faltim gran escut, s&#8217;han anat produint moltes efusions que han omplert i configurat els altiplans d&#8217;El Hierro des de fa m\u00e9s de 100.000 anys. Les desc\u00e0rregues propiciades pels lliscaments van afavorir la pujada de nous magmes. Aquests volcans, de tipus estromboli\u00e0, han presentat una explosivitat de grau mitj\u00e0 que s&#8217;ha manifestat m\u00e9s freq\u00fcentment a La Palma i Tenerife que a El Hierro. Excepcionalment, i si creuaven un aq\u00fc\u00edfer, agafaven una intensa explosivitat, per\u00f2 en conjunt s\u00f3n volcans que es localitzen a les dorsals generant erupcions fisurals de naturalesa bas\u00e0ltica donant basanites i tefrites. Aquestes formacions recobreixen gaireb\u00e9 completament tota la illa.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erupcions finals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A El Hierro, i prop dels 20.000 anys, es van fer freq\u00fcents cons monogen\u00e8tics explosius amb emissions d&#8217;unes setmanes i escampats de manera local per tota l&#8217;illa, per\u00f2 concentrats sobre les falles dorsals de la Y a l&#8217;illa. Poc despr\u00e9s, i a causa del creixement de l&#8217;illa, els seus talussos es van tornar inestables i entre els 20.000 i els 15.000 anys es va produir un altre gran lliscament al nord que va esfondrar i va enfonsar sota el mar una quarta part de la superf\u00edcie de l\u2019illa. Aquest lliscament, m\u00e9s tots els anteriors, va tallar el perfil circular de l&#8217;illa i li va donar l&#8217;actual contorn en forma Y. Avui dia la cambra magm\u00e0tica del vulcanisme d&#8217;El Hierro es troba al nord sota la badia <em>del Golfo<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Com a resum de la hist\u00f2ria geol\u00f2gica d\u2019El Hierro podem dir que ha patit un cicle de construcci\u00f3 i destrucci\u00f3. S&#8217;hi han repetit tres fases que han donat el seg\u00fcent bucle de successos. Primer, un creixement de l&#8217;illa sobre la base de repetides erupcions volc\u00e0niques. Segon, una creixent inestabilitat dels seus talussos fins a propiciar lliscaments gegants a partir de les esquerdes del rift illenc.
