Vidas paralelas<\/em><\/a> (Verbum). Com va anar sorgint la idea del teu llibre?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sempre s&#8217;ha associat a Beethoven la figura de Goya, perqu\u00e8 van ser contemporanis, per\u00f2 amb prou feines es van \u201ctocar\u201d. A Gald\u00f3s, en canvi, que neix el 1843, mentre que Beethoven havia mort el 1827, ja li arriba la imatge, anem a dir santificada, del compositor i, gr\u00e0cies a la vida musical madrilenya, cada cop s&#8217;identifica m\u00e9s amb la seva m\u00fasica, que s\u2019incardina amb l&#8217;esdevenir dels seus personatges i amb la trama d&#8217;algunes de les seves novel\u00b7les. Per\u00f2 penso que Gald\u00f3s i Beethoven van ser dos defensors ac\u00e8rrims de l&#8217;ideari il\u00b7lustrat, de l&#8217;esperit liberal i, per tant, de l&#8217;educaci\u00f3 (a Gald\u00f3s, segons l&#8217;ideal krausista) com a \u00fanic ascensor social per als desafavorits. Potser per aquesta independ\u00e8ncia, malgrat els seus multitudinaris funerals, tots dos van morir a la mis\u00e8ria, abandonats per les autoritats. Si Beethoven i Gald\u00f3s visquessin avui, tinc clar que lluitarien contra els fanatismes de la nostra \u00e8poca i que, per tant, immediatament serien cancel\u00b7lats.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Si Beethoven i Gald\u00f3s visquessin avui, tinc clar que lluitarien contra els fanatismes de la nostra \u00e8poca i que, per tant, immediatament serien cancel\u00b7lats&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Quina m\u00fasica li interessava a Gald\u00f3s, com a mel\u00f2man, cr\u00edtic i int\u00e8rpret ocasional?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sempre se l&#8217;ha identificat amb la sarsuela, perqu\u00e8 \u00e9s veritat que va ser el moment de l&#8217;eclosi\u00f3 del g\u00e8nere durant la segona meitat del segle XIX, i perqu\u00e8 algunes de les seves obres posteriorment es van adaptar en aquest format. Per\u00f2 Gald\u00f3s va ser un apassionat de la m\u00fasica que podr\u00edem anomenar cosmopolita, especialment, la dels cl\u00e0ssics, Mozart i Beethoven, per\u00f2 tamb\u00e9 d&#8217;altres m\u00fasics contemporanis a ell, com Wagner. A trav\u00e9s de les freq\u00fcents visites al <em>Teatro Real<\/em> de Madrid, es va familiaritzar tamb\u00e9 amb l&#8217;\u00f2pera italiana belcantista, Verdi i les obres de Meyerbeer. Amb el pas del temps, la m\u00fasica va anar guanyant pres\u00e8ncia a l&#8217;obra de Gald\u00f3s i no nom\u00e9s a la seva obra narrativa, sin\u00f3 tamb\u00e9 al teatre. Alhora, i aix\u00f2 em sembla el m\u00e9s interessant, encara que Gald\u00f3s tocava el piano (com podia, perqu\u00e8 mai no va rebre classes), en la seva maduresa es va proposar formar-se sobre els fonaments te\u00f2rics de la m\u00fasica, \u00e9s a dir, en harmonia i an\u00e0lisi, amb un m\u00fasic militar anomenat Manuel Manrique de Lara. En resum, Gald\u00f3s volia entendre com estava feta la m\u00fasica que el fascinava.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Com s&#8217;enllacen les al\u00b7lusions o records de Gald\u00f3s a <em>La desheredada<\/em>, <em>Fortunata y Jacinta<\/em> i <em>Tristana<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>S\u00f3n tres contextos molt diferents perqu\u00e8 les obres s\u00f3n molt dispars entre si. Per\u00f2 la m\u00fasica a Gald\u00f3s sempre t\u00e9 un fi fil simb\u00f2lic (perqu\u00e8 despr\u00e9s els \u201cmoderns\u201d li diguin <em>garbancero<\/em>, ja ho veus). A <em>La desheredada, <\/em>on es planteja la perdici\u00f3 de la protagonista en el context de la I Rep\u00fablica, la m\u00fasica de la <em>Sonata Op, 31 n\u00ba 2, <\/em>que Beethoven havia lligat d\u2019alguna manera a <em>La Tempesta <\/em>de Shakespeare, parla de penediment i de redempci\u00f3, aix\u00ed com en altres fragments la impot\u00e8ncia dels pianistes aficionats davant l&#8217;obra de Beethoven s&#8217;assembla al maldestre maneig pol\u00edtic de l&#8217;era republicana. A <em>Fortunata <\/em>hi ha molts fronts oberts, perqu\u00e8 \u00e9s el cim inassolible, des de l\u2019assimilaci\u00f3 del mercat t\u00e8xtil de Madrid a la revoluci\u00f3 de l\u2019estil de Beethoven davant del de Mpzart, fins a la \u201ctra\u00efci\u00f3\u201d <em>de las Samaniegas<\/em> als herois de la narraci\u00f3, Fortunata, per descomptat, per\u00f2 tamb\u00e9 el mateix Beethoven, passant per la bella escena del <em>Teatro Real<\/em>, amb l&#8217;estrena a Madrid del <em>Rienzi<\/em> wagneri\u00e0, un trib\u00fa apedregat pel seu propi poble, igual que Amadeu de Savoia, com l\u2019entrada en escena de les classes mitjanes, que Gald\u00f3s no va arribar a veure. A Tristana hi ha un trauma f\u00edsic de fons, perqu\u00e8 Beethoven s&#8217;obliga a viure a causa del seu art mentre que l&#8217;\u00f2rfena \u00e9s un reflex petit-burg\u00e8s d&#8217;aquesta situaci\u00f3, aquesta resignaci\u00f3, la seva conviv\u00e8ncia for\u00e7ada amb Don Lope.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Crec que la meva novel\u00b7la favorita d&#8217;aquella \u00e8poca \u00e9s la que mai no va escriure, que \u00e9s La Regenta, tan actual sobre la nostra miserable condici\u00f3 humana&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Quina \u00e9s la teva novel\u00b7la preferida de Gald\u00f3s i per qu\u00e8?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aquesta pregunta \u00e9s dif\u00edcil. Crec que la meva novel\u00b7la favorita d&#8217;aquella \u00e8poca \u00e9s la que mai no va escriure, que \u00e9s La Regenta, tan actual sobre la nostra miserable condici\u00f3 humana. De Gald\u00f3s m&#8217;agraden moltes coses tamb\u00e9, els <em>Episodios,<\/em> o aquesta mena de miniatures precioses, <em>La de Bringas<\/em>, <em>Tormento<\/em>. Per\u00f2, \u00e9s clar, qu\u00e8 es pot dir davant de <em>Fortunata y Jacinta<\/em>, qu\u00e8 es pot escriure despr\u00e9s d&#8217;aix\u00f2, sobretot pel que fa al seu fin\u00edssim retrat de la societat madrilenya de l&#8217;\u00e8poca, des dels estrats m\u00e9s alts, els habitants del <em>Teatro Real<\/em>, fins als baixos fons, l&#8217;entorn de la <em>Plaza Mayor<\/em> on viu Fortunata amb els seus oncles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sembla que Gald\u00f3s va posar una mica de sistema en les seves idees musicals al seu article \u201cLa M\u00fasica\u201d, publicat a <em>La Prensa<\/em> el 3 de mar\u00e7 de 1886. Un article que reprodueixes entre les p\u00e0gines 54 i 58 del teu assaig. Per qu\u00e8 \u00e9s tan important aquest text?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perqu\u00e8 ens parla de la m\u00fasica que Gald\u00f3s, un assidu a representacions i concerts, tenia a l&#8217;imaginari el 1886, \u00e9s a dir, la m\u00fasica que s&#8217;havia pogut escoltar a Madrid amb certa freq\u00fc\u00e8ncia, i aix\u00f2 \u00e9s fonamental per reconstruir l&#8217;\u00e8poca a nivell cultural. Hem de pensar que la m\u00fasica era (al contrari que avui), un petit miracle a qu\u00e8 s&#8217;accedia amb molta sort (i, l\u00f2gicament, diners). No hi havia televisi\u00f3, ni r\u00e0dio ni plataformes de streaming, la m\u00fasica en directe era la joia de la corona de les arts, i aix\u00ed es va viure llavors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>D&#8217;on procedeix la teva predilecci\u00f3 per Beethoven?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Em sembla que, encara que la seva vida i la seva obra s&#8217;han idealitzat molt (quin remei, \u00e9s clar), ha estat un dels creadors moderns en el sentit de l&#8217;home lliure que nom\u00e9s respon de si mateix i de la seva pr\u00f2pia creaci\u00f3, encara que aix\u00f2 no li estalvi\u00e9s la mis\u00e8ria, exactament igual que Mozart trenta anys abans, just despr\u00e9s de la Revoluci\u00f3 Francesa. Conv\u00e9 recordar que Beethoven va tenir una crisi molt gran el 1802, quan es va adonar que es quedaria sord del tot, i que si no va arribar a su\u00efcidar-se va ser per la idea de continuar creant, de continuar component m\u00fasica que, en bona mesura, el m\u00f3n tampoc va saber apreciar en un moment governat per la m\u00fasica lleugera de Rossini.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qui era Malats?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Malats va ser un dels grans pianistes del moment. Era catal\u00e0, igual que Vi\u00f1es o Pujol (que Fortuny va immortalitzar al seu llen\u00e7) i va ser molt present tamb\u00e9 a Fran\u00e7a, on tocaria la Suite Iberia d&#8217;Alb\u00e9niz, que la va concebre per a ell. Malats tamb\u00e9 era compositor i hagu\u00e9s volgut adaptar a sarsuela la Marianela de Gald\u00f3s, per\u00f2 finalment no va poder realitzar un projecte tan ambici\u00f3s. Tot i aix\u00f2, tots dos es van fer amics i Gald\u00f3s va poder con\u00e8ixer gr\u00e0cies a ell algunes obres infreq\u00fcents (en aquell moment) de Beethoven, com la <em>Sonata Op. 111<\/em> que tanca el cicle monumental de les trenta-dues sonates per a piano. A Malats va trobar Gald\u00f3s un interlocutor per parlar de la m\u00fasica de Beethoven, per aix\u00f2 \u00e9s tan important la seva figura.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Gald\u00f3s va ser un gran defensor de la dona a la seva \u00e8poca, sobretot, de la seva injusta posici\u00f3 social a causa d&#8217;una baixa formaci\u00f3&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Fortunata, Jacinta, Saturna, Tristana, donya Emilia Pardo Baz\u00e1n\u2026 Molts noms de dona al teu llibre\u2026 Li dediques moltes p\u00e0gines a la q\u00fcesti\u00f3. Quin lloc ocupa Gald\u00f3s entre elles?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gald\u00f3s va ser un gran defensor de la dona a la seva \u00e8poca, sobretot, de la seva injusta posici\u00f3 social a causa d&#8217;una baixa formaci\u00f3 que la condemnava per tota la vida a la submissi\u00f3 de l&#8217;home (en aquest cas, Pardo Baz\u00e1n, com George Sand abans, eren l&#8217;excepci\u00f3, perqu\u00e8 eren riques i es podien permetre el luxe de ser independents). En aquest sentit, Gald\u00f3s assimila la trista figura del <em>dilettante<\/em> musical a la de la dona vuitcentista, que es mou entre la impot\u00e8ncia de la seva escassa educaci\u00f3 i, per tant, les seves nul\u00b7les aspiracions a la vida. A Gald\u00f3s, com en la pr\u00f2pia realitat, la dona d&#8217;estrat petitburg\u00e8s (Gl\u00f2ria, Camilla, Tristana, Ol\u00edmpia\u2026, Ana Ozores toca amb un sol dit\u2026) colpeja el piano (literalment) de la mateixa manera que traeix un esperit independent negat per la mateixa societat a qu\u00e8 pertanyen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qu\u00e8 faries si fossis ministra d&#8217;Educaci\u00f3?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Rialles\u2026) Jo no podria ser ministra, no acataria la disciplina de partits i, encara menys, en el trist paper de la dona en la pol\u00edtica d&#8217;avui. Per\u00f2, si pogu\u00e9s fer el que faig a les meves classes per a tothom, establiria un sistema d&#8217;ensenyament basat en el coneixement a partir de les fonts, progressiu per\u00f2 esfor\u00e7at, basat en la igualtat d&#8217;oportunitats i en un esperit il\u00b7lustrat que concep l&#8217;ensenyament com a ascensor social. Per\u00f2, com Gald\u00f3s i Beethoven darrere d&#8217;una societat lliure i justa, em temo que encara haurem de continuar esperant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ets hiperactiva. Sabem que no saps parar quieta\u2026 Qu\u00e8 est\u00e0s tramant?
