Vaig voler viure amb profunditat i rebutjar tot all\u00f2 que no fos vida&#8230; Per a no adonar-me, en el moment de la mort, que no havia viscut\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Amb aquestes paraules <strong>Henry David Thoreau<\/strong> explica el prop\u00f2sit que el va portar a retirar-se al bosc. L\u2019any 1845, va deixar casa seva i es va instal\u00b7lar en una cabanya, que ell mateix havia constru\u00eft, a la vora de la llacuna Walden (Massachussetts). Va romandre dos anys, dos mesos i dos dies lluny de l&#8217;incessant enrenou per a experimentar una vida integrada en la naturalesa, aliena als \u00a0paranys dels convencionalismes socials i de l&#8217;economia gr\u00e0cies a l\u2019autoabastiment.<\/p>\n<p>Amb les anotacions del seu diari va escriure la seva c\u00e8lebre novel\u00b7la, <strong><em>Walden<\/em><\/strong>, que va trigar nou anys a acabar. El llibre \u00e9s un cant a la simplicitat i un q\u00fcestionament radical de les servituds de la vida social. Al final de la novel\u00b7la es pregunta: \u201cMentre Anglaterra s&#8217;esfor\u00e7a per curar la podridura de la patata, hi haur\u00e0 alg\u00fa que faci el mateix amb la <strong>podridura del cervell<\/strong>, molt m\u00e9s estesa i fatal?\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Thoreau es referia a la <em>potato rot<\/em>, la crisi aliment\u00e0ria que va assolar Europa septentrional durant la d\u00e8cada de 1840. Les patates es podrien literalment per l&#8217;efecte d&#8217;un fong que va abocar els habitants de les Illes Brit\u00e0niques a la fam. En aquest context, denuncia l&#8217;escassa preocupaci\u00f3 que, al seu torn, suscita la \u201cpodridura del cervell\u201d (<em>brain rot<\/em>), la pobresa intel\u00b7lectual d&#8217;amplis sectors de la poblaci\u00f3.<\/p>\n<p>En la novel\u00b7la lamenta que els estudiants \u201camb prou feines disposen d\u2019algun coneixement sobre els cl\u00e0ssics anglesos. Pel que fa a la considerada saviesa de la humanitat, els cl\u00e0ssics antics i les \u00abB\u00edblies\u00bb, que estan a l&#8217;abast de tots els qui volen saber d&#8217;ells, els esfor\u00e7os dedicats al seu coneixement s\u00f3n molt minsos.\u201d Critica la instrucci\u00f3 escolar nord-americana per ser \u201ctan innocent i limitada que l&#8217;alumne mai accedeix a un coneixement conscient sin\u00f3 tan sols a un estat confiat i reverencial; aix\u00ed, del nen no es forja l&#8217;home, sin\u00f3 que aquest sembla romandre sempre en la inf\u00e0ncia\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019any 1948, cent anys despr\u00e9s de Thoreau, B. F. Skinner va escriure<strong> <em>Walden Dos<\/em>,<\/strong> una novel\u00b7la de ci\u00e8ncia-ficci\u00f3 que presenta una utopia -o distopia- basada en el conductisme i en l&#8217;enginyeria\u00a0 del comportament. En aquesta microsocietat, constru\u00efda segons principis pretesament cient\u00edfics, s&#8217;apliquen m\u00e8todes psicol\u00f2gics per millorar la conviv\u00e8ncia mitjan\u00e7ant el control artificial de la for\u00e7a dels instints. Els infants s\u00f3n criats pel conjunt de la comunitat i no estudien les assignatures habituals, sin\u00f3 que se&#8217;ls ensenyen les t\u00e8cniques d&#8217;aprendre i pensar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019any 2024, <em>brain rot<\/em> (podridura mental o cerebral) va ser triada com la paraula de l&#8217;any per l&#8217;<strong>Oxford University Press<\/strong>, per a destacar l&#8217;impacte dels continguts digitals en la salut mental i en la cultura contempor\u00e0nia. Actualment, descriu el deteriorament intel\u00b7lectual, psicol\u00f2gic o cognitiu d&#8217;una \u00a0persona provocat pel consum excessiu de continguts trivials o escassament interpel\u00b7ladors. Ens adverteix del perill de l<strong>&#8216;exposici\u00f3 a materials en l\u00ednia de baixa qualitat<\/strong>, en particular, a les <strong>xarxes socials<\/strong>. Per tant, senyala com el desmesurat \u00a0\u00fas de mitjans digitals, especialment d&#8217;entreteniment de format breu, pot afectar negativament \u00a0la salut cognitiva: d\u00e8ficit de concentraci\u00f3, fatiga mental, ansietat generalitzada, desconnexi\u00f3 emocional, poca toler\u00e0ncia al silenci i a l\u2019avorriment, recerca constant de la recompensa immediata i dificultat per a recordar.<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;expressi\u00f3 <strong><em>brain rot<\/em><\/strong> havia reaparegut en diversos f\u00f2rums d&#8217;Internet -mig de broma, mig seriosament- per a designar v\u00eddeos sense sentit, que freguen l&#8217;absurd o que simplement semblen dissenyats per alg\u00fa amb el cervell podrit. La irrupci\u00f3 de la intel\u00b7lig\u00e8ncia artificial va fer evolucionar r\u00e0pidament el fenomen. Va mutar convertint-se en un g\u00e8nere viral espec\u00edfic, dissenyat per a captar l&#8217;atenci\u00f3 de milions d&#8217;usuaris en les xarxes socials.<\/p>\n<p>Els v\u00eddeos <em>brain rot<\/em> no cerquen la satisfacci\u00f3 de l&#8217;espectador,\u00a0 sin\u00f3 que apel\u00b7len a la seva compulsivitat. Els manca context i narrativa. Solen presentar imatges d&#8217;est\u00e8tica extremadament realista i, alhora, de contingut surrealista. De vegades, al\u00b7ludeixen a personatges recognoscibles en situacions grotesques. Al cap i a la fi, son est\u00edmuls visuals que desafien els l\u00edmits de la dec\u00e8ncia i de la l\u00f2gica per a desconcertar\u00a0 uns cervells visualment saturats. Com m\u00e9s gran \u00a0sigui el grau d&#8217;histrionisme, major probabilitat de viralitzar-se. Tot i que puguin transmetre continguts que en un altre context serien clarament censurables, proporcionen abundants beneficis als seus creadors.<\/p>\n<p>Aix\u00ed, amb el terme <em>brain rot<\/em> es defineix tant un tipus de contingut com, tamb\u00e9, un <strong>estat mental col\u00b7lectiu<\/strong> que es reflecteix, per exemple, en la manera de parlar -amb frases cada cop m\u00e9s curtes, ca\u00f2tiques o inconnexes- o en l&#8217;increment de la toler\u00e0ncia envers l&#8217;absurd, el deliri o la incomoditat com a integrants del paisatge digital quotidi\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p>Thoreau ens advertia dels perills de la pobresa mental, del risc de donar l&#8217;esquena als cl\u00e0ssics, de la possibilitat d\u2019embolicar-nos\u00a0 en les complexitats de la vida comunit\u00e0ria.<strong> Skinner<\/strong> ens prometia una felicitat falsificada, una harmonia conquerida a expenses de la llibertat individual. Tal vegada el primer, si ens vei\u00e9s, retornaria a la seva cabana al costat del llac. I potser el segon quedaria fascinat per la sofisticaci\u00f3 de l&#8217;enginyeria social. A nosaltres ens toca bregar amb els desafiaments del nostre temps.
