Per exemple, sempre s\u2019ha dit que els cient\u00edfics, \u00a0especialment els matem\u00e0tics, realitzen els seus treballs m\u00e9s brillants quan s\u00f3n encara comparativament joves.<\/p>\n<p>Per\u00f2 la meva nova investigaci\u00f3, publicada a <em>Developmental Review, <\/em>suggereix que les difer\u00e8ncies cognitives entre els grans i els joves estan disminuint en els darrers temps. Aix\u00f2 \u00e9s molt important, ja que els estereotipus sobre la intel\u00b7lig\u00e8ncia de les persones de m\u00e9s de seixanta anys poden estar inhibint-los, tant pel que fa a la feina com fora d\u2019ella.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019envelliment cognitiu s\u2019acostuma a mesurar comparant adults joves, d\u2019entre 18 i 30 anys, amb adults de m\u00e9s edat, de 65 o m\u00e9s. Hi ha tota una s\u00e8rie de tasques que els adults no resolen tan b\u00e9, en comparaci\u00f3 amb els joves, com ara la mem\u00f2ria, la capacitat espacial i la velocitat de processament, que s\u00f3n les que acostumen a constituir la base de les proves de coeficient intel\u00b7lectual. Dit aix\u00f2, cal dir tamb\u00e9 que hi ha altres tasques en les quals les persones grans obtenen millors resultats que les m\u00e9s joves, com ara la comprensi\u00f3 lectora i el vocabulari.<\/p>\n<p>La disminuci\u00f3 de la cognici\u00f3 s\u2019anomena envelliment cognitiu, i \u00e9s una cosa que acaba passant-li a tothom. Cal dir tamb\u00e9 que, a difer\u00e8ncia del que se sol pensar, els d\u00e8ficits cognitius relacionats amb l\u2019edat comencen molt aviat: s\u2019ha mesurat que s\u2019inicien a partir dels 25 anys.<\/p>\n<p>Normalment, nom\u00e9s quan una persona arriba a una edat avan\u00e7ada, l\u2019acumulaci\u00f3 d\u2019aquests efectes s\u2019esdev\u00e9 observable. Les queixes m\u00e9s comunes solen ser entrar a una habitaci\u00f3 i oblidar per quina ra\u00f3 s\u2019hi havia entat, dificultats per a recordar noms o per a conduir en la foscor&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>El problema de la comparaci\u00f3<\/h2>\n<p>Aix\u00f2 no obstant, de vegades, comparar els adult joves amb els adults m\u00e9s grans pot resultar engany\u00f3s. S\u00f3n generacions que han crescut en \u00e8poques diferents, amb diferents nivells d\u2019educaci\u00f3, atenci\u00f3 m\u00e8dica i nutrici\u00f3; que porten tamb\u00e9 estils de vida diferents. Algunes persones grans han viscut una guerra mundial, mentre que la generaci\u00f3 m\u00e9s jove ha crescut amb internet.<\/p>\n<p>La majoria d\u2019aquests factors afavoreixen la generaci\u00f3 m\u00e9s jove, i aix\u00f2 pot explicar part del seu avantatge en les tasques cognitives.<\/p>\n<p>De fet, moltes de les investigacions existents mostren que el coeficient intel\u00b7lectual ha anat augmentant globalment al llarg del segle XX. Aix\u00f2 significa que les generacions nascudes m\u00e9s tard s\u00f3n m\u00e9s capaces que les que han nascut abans, cosa que es pot constatar quan ambdues generacions s\u00f3n avaluades de la mateixa manera a la mateixa edat.<\/p>\n<p>Tot i aix\u00ed, cada vegada hi ha m\u00e9s evid\u00e8ncies que l\u2019augment del coeficient intel\u00b7lectual s\u2019est\u00e0 estabilitzant, de manera que, al llarg de les dues \u00faltimes d\u00e8cades, els adults joves no s\u00f3n m\u00e9s capa\u00e7os cognitivament que els de la cohort nascuda poc abans. En conjunt, aquests factors esmentats poden ser subjacents als resultats actuals, en el sentit que les difer\u00e8ncies entre els adults joves i els m\u00e9s grans estan disminuint amb el temps.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Nous resultats<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>La meva investigaci\u00f3 es va iniciar quan el meu equip va comen\u00e7ar a obtenir resultats estranys en el nostre laboratori. Vam descobrir que, sovint, els resultats de les difer\u00e8ncies per edat que obten\u00edem entre adults joves i grans eren menors o inexistents, en comparaci\u00f3 amb les investigacions anteriors de principis de la d\u00e8cada del 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Aix\u00f2 em va induir a observar les tend\u00e8ncies en les difer\u00e8ncies d\u2019edat en la literatura psicol\u00f2gica pr\u00f2pia d\u2019aquesta \u00e0rea. Vaig descobrir una varietat de dades que comparaven adults joves amb grans des de la d\u00e8cada de 1960 fins a l\u2019actualitat. Vaig tra\u00e7ar aquestes dades amb l\u2019any de publicaci\u00f3 i vaig descobrir que els d\u00e8ficits d\u2019edat s\u2019havien anat reduint al llarg de les sis \u00faltimes d\u00e8cades.<\/p>\n<p>A continuaci\u00f3, vaig avaluar si la mitjana de l\u2019increment cognitiu al llarg del temps, observat en tots els individus, era un resultat que tamb\u00e9 s\u2019aplicava espec\u00edficament als adults grans. Hi ha moltes i prou \u00e0mplies bases de dades que han treballat amb els mateixos grups de persones, que cada pocs anys anaven realitzant successivament les mateixes proves. Vaig analitzar els estudis que utilitzaven aquests conjunts de dades per a observar els adults grans.<\/p>\n<p>Vaig descobrir que, igual que en el cas dels joves, cada nova cohort era m\u00e9s capa\u00e7 cognitivament. Per\u00f2, aleshores, si les difer\u00e8ncies estaven desapareixent, significava aix\u00f2 que les millores en la capacitat cognitiva dels joves s\u2019havia alentit o que la de les persones grans havia augmentat?<\/p>\n<p>Per a esbrinar-ho, vaig analitzar les dades que el meu propi laboratori havia recollit durant un per\u00edode de set anys. Vaig dissociar els resultats dels joves i els dels grans. Per exemple, el nombre de nens escolaritzats va augmentar significativament a la d\u00e8cada de 1960, i el sistema s\u2019assemblava m\u00e9s al d\u2019avui en dia que al de comen\u00e7aments del segle XX.<\/p>\n<p>Aix\u00f2 es reflecteix en el fet que les cohorts que augmenten les seves puntuacions actualment, comparativament, s\u00f3n les dels adults grans. Simult\u00e0niament, sembla que els adults joves han tocat sostre i ja no milloren tant amb cada cohort.<\/p>\n<p>No est\u00e0 del tot clar per qu\u00e8 les generacions joves han deixat de millorar. Algunes investigacions han explorat l\u2019edat materna, la salut mental i, fins i tot, les tend\u00e8ncies evolutives. Per la meva part, m\u00e9s aviat penso que existeix un sostre natural, un l\u00edmit m\u00e9s enll\u00e0 del qual factors com l\u2019educaci\u00f3, la nutrici\u00f3 o la salut ja no contribueixen a millorar significativament el rendiment cognitiu.<\/p>\n<p>Aquesta informaci\u00f3 t\u00e9 implicacions importants per a la investigaci\u00f3 sobre la dem\u00e8ncia. Per exemple, \u00e9s possible que un adult gran d\u2019avui en dia en les primeres etapes de dem\u00e8ncia, pugui superar una prova dissenyada fa 20 o 30 anys per a la poblaci\u00f3 de la seva mateixa edat d\u2019aquella \u00e8poca.<\/p>\n<p>Per tant, si els adults grans actuals tenen una major capacitat cognitiva que les generacions precedents, potser sigui necessari revisar les definicions de dem\u00e8ncia que depenen del nivell de capacitat esperat d\u2019un individu d\u2019una certa edat.<\/p>\n<p>Finalment, hem de repensar tamb\u00e9 qu\u00e8 significa envellir.
